Installing MetaTrader 4 or 5 on your Forex VPS

Updated 26 Oct 2026

This guide shows how to install MetaTrader on your Forex VPS and keep your Expert Advisors (EAs) running around the clock.

1. Connect to the VPS

Connect with Remote Desktop using the IP address, username and password from the service page (see the Remote Desktop guide in this help centre). Everything below is done inside the VPS, not on your own computer.

2. Download your broker's terminal

Open the browser on the VPS, go to your broker's website and download their MT4 or MT5 installer. Using the broker's own version means the correct trade servers are already listed. Run the installer and keep the default settings.

3. Log in to your trading account

Open MetaTrader, choose File › Login to Trade Account, enter your account number, password and the server name from your broker, and tick Save password so the terminal can log in again on its own after a restart.

4. Copy your Expert Advisors and indicators

  1. In MetaTrader choose File › Open Data Folder.
  2. Open the MQL4 folder (MT4) or MQL5 folder (MT5).
  3. Copy your EA files into Experts and your indicators into Indicators. You can copy files from your computer through Remote Desktop with copy and paste.
  4. Back in MetaTrader, right-click Expert Advisors in the Navigator and choose Refresh.

Drag the EA onto a chart, allow algorithmic trading in its settings, and turn on Algo Trading (MT5) or AutoTrading (MT4) in the toolbar.

5. Start MetaTrader with Windows

So that trading resumes after a reboot or a Windows update:

  1. Press Win + R, type shell:startup and press Enter.
  2. Copy the MetaTrader shortcut from the desktop into that folder.

Running several terminals

Install each terminal into its own folder (the installer asks for a folder in its settings). Each MT4 or MT5 terminal uses roughly 300 to 500 MB of memory with a few charts open. Close charts you do not use and set Max bars in chart lower in Tools › Options › Charts to save memory.

Tips for stable trading

  • Disconnect, do not sign out: close the Remote Desktop window with the X. Choosing Sign out closes MetaTrader.
  • Keep Windows updated, but schedule restarts outside trading hours.
  • Check the Journal and Experts tabs after any restart to make sure your EAs started.
