Connecting to a Windows VPS with Remote Desktop

Updated 27 Oct 2026

Windows servers, including every Forex VPS, are used through Remote Desktop (RDP). You see the server's desktop in a window and use it like a normal computer. You need the IP address, username (usually Administrator) and password from the service page in the client area.

From a Windows computer

  1. Press the Windows key, type Remote Desktop Connection and open it.
  2. Enter the server's IP address in Computer and click Connect.
  3. Choose More choices › Use a different account, enter Administrator and the password.
  4. Accept the certificate warning the first time. It appears because the server uses its own certificate.

Tip: click Show Options before connecting and save the connection to your desktop so you can open it with one click next time.

From a Mac

Install Windows App (formerly Microsoft Remote Desktop) from the Mac App Store. Click +, choose Add PC, enter the IP address, add the username and password as a user account, then double-click the PC to connect.

From a phone or tablet

Install Windows App or Remote Desktop on iPhone, iPad or Android, add the PC with the IP address and log in with the same details. This is handy for checking your trades while away from your computer.

Copying files to the server

Copy a file on your computer and paste it into a folder on the server; Remote Desktop moves it for you. For larger files, use Local Resources › More in the connection options and share a drive, which then appears under This PC on the server.

Disconnect instead of signing out

When you are done, close the Remote Desktop window. Your programs, such as MetaTrader, keep running on the server. If you choose Sign out from the Start menu, programs are closed.

Change the password

For security, change the password after your first login: press Ctrl + Alt + End inside the session and choose Change a password. You can also set a new password from the service page in the client area.

If you cannot connect

  • Make sure the server shows as Running in the client area; start or reboot it from there if needed.
  • Wait two or three minutes after a reboot; Windows takes longer to start than Linux.
  • Some office and public networks block port 3389. Try another network, such as mobile data.
  • Use the browser console on the service page, which works even when Remote Desktop does not.
